Tambi\u00e9n puede contribuir a una mayor comprensi\u00f3n de la respuesta de las bacterias ante los tratamientos con antibi\u00f3ticos, y aportar datos \u00fatiles para reforzar la seguridad alimentaria teniendo en cuenta que la <strong>D. radiodurans<\/strong> aparece en algunos alimentos enlatados.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El organismo tambi\u00e9n est\u00e1 siendo estudiado para aplicaciones en la limpieza medioambiental de lugares contaminados con radiaci\u00f3n o sustancias t\u00f3xicas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>El equipo de Brian Crane y Bhumit Patel ha descubierto un gen en la D. radiodurans que, cuando es expuesto a la radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta, aumenta la producci\u00f3n de una enzima responsable de la formaci\u00f3n de \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>En otras palabras, la bacteria es mucho m\u00e1s vulnerable a los da\u00f1os de la radiaci\u00f3n cuando no cuenta con la ayuda del \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Sin embargo, los investigadores han descubierto, con asombro, que la ausencia de \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico no tiene ning\u00fan efecto sobre la capacidad de las bacterias para resistir la acci\u00f3n de otras amenazas, como los da\u00f1os por oxidaci\u00f3n vinculados a los radicales libres t\u00f3xicos.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En los experimentos realizados con bacterias manipuladas gen\u00e9ticamente para que careciesen de este gen, los investigadores han comprobado que dichas bacterias a\u00fan son capaces de autorrepararse cuando sufren da\u00f1os como consecuencia de la exposici\u00f3n a la radiaci\u00f3n, pero no crecen ni proliferan.
